Summary by Dayna
The Pirates of Penzance. The Pirates of Penzance is a funny/love story about an apprenticed pirate named Frederick. Frederick lived with the pirates for 13 years, and will leave them when he’s 21. When that day comes he swears to kill the pirates for there crimes, but then asks the Pirate King and all the other pirates to come with him and make his promise unnecessary. Sadly the pirates refused, so he leaves with Ruth (a 47 year old woman. They arrive on land, but Frederick sees some young ladies on the beach. Seeing Ruth, as gray haired old women, he leaves her and she goes back to the pirates. Frederick then tries to get one of the girls to love and marry him, but being a pirate for 13 years does not impress the young ladies. Then Mabel the eldest daughter steps forward and swears to marry him and give him a chance. But then the pirates come and attack them and try to marry all the daughters on the spot! When the daughter’s father (The Modern Major General) comes to there rescue, he tells the pirates that he’s an orphan boy so the pirates let them go. Because the pirates were orphans themselves. So the Modern Major General, Mabel, Frederick, and the rest of his daughters go home. But later that night the General cries because he lied to the pirates about being an orphan. Frederick comforts the Major General by reminding him that they would have married his large family on the spot if he hadn’t lied. Then Frederick calls the police to make plans to kill the pirates. When everyone goes to bed Frederick sits outside to think. Then Ruth and the Pirate King come to tell Frederick about a paradox. A paradox is a clumsy arrangement that happens on a leap year when Frederick so happens to be born. The Pirate King and Ruth tell him how he is only 5 and a quarter because of the paradox. They also tell Frederick that he is still a pirate so he can’t leave them till he’s 21. The Pirate King was furious and swore to attack the General at midnight. The pirates come and attack the General and his daughters, but the police arrive and save them by commanding the pirates to yield in Queen Victoria’s name. So the pirates yield and they all live happily ever after. It was fun being a part of the play; I was called the best pirate from the director and costume designer. They gave me the best pirate costume to wear. These are just a few family field trips we have been involved in recently.
