What is the difference between flora and fauna? Flora talks about plants and fauna the animals. We discover that if we recycle we can have a minimal stamp on the environment. The girls were giving info on approx. time for each item such as glass, plastic, diapers, paper bag, plastic bag and shoes would take to degrade over time. Both were in a relay to place the items in the correct time box for each item to break down back to dirt. Overall we learned that it takes a few hundred years for glass, shoes and plastic to degrade while paper takes only a few months. The hands on project was making a terrarium out of a 2 liter bottle. They both planted flowers and we already have growth in each terrarium. It is neat to see how the condensation helps keep the plants hydrated. Watering is minumualized, since the terrium holds the water in. We were off to a scavenger hunt in the pioneers time early 1800's. We learned that the Seminoles and Crakers used palm fronds to make dolls and hats. Our featured speaker was a Biologist from the state of Florida, Mr Eric. He shared with us a American alligator, Pine snake, Crocodile, and two kinds of turtles, one being a soft shell turtle. He share with us if we cannot identify the snake leave it alone. A reminder to us was it is against the law to feed an alligator because it gets use to people feeding it and is no longer fearful and equates food with the person. The girls were able to pet the alligator, Dayna says "That was the best"! Jillian said "It was too cool to imagine that I was able to be at the History Center"!
