The Central Florida Zoo had a two hour class on Nocturnal Animals. We learned some new vocabulary, Diurnal, daytime animals that sleep at night. Nocturnal, night time animals that sleep during day. Crepuscular, animals that are awake during dawn and dusk. Cathemeral, animals that are awake at random times, day or night.
Bio luminescence, the scorpion glows in the dark. Echolocation, animal emits sounds to bounce back info of distance, texture and food source. In the classroom we experienced seeing a flying squirrel, a scorpion, and the red-eye tree frog. We were able to touch a five foot python and see the finger feathers on a Eastern Screech Owl that makes it have silent flight. The zoo had a insect area with a telescope to view insects on slides. A puppet show with bug puppets, bug puzzles and books. A large multi mirror to see how a bug sees. Many live insects were on display like ants, roaches, spiders, scorpions, praying mantis, beetles, water beetles, and katydids.
Butterflies, walking sticks, beetles and grasshoppers were displayed in large glass boxes.
Our favorite insect to see was the velvet ant found in Florida.
